The common cold is also known as catarrh. In homeopathy the symptoms can be treated, or even the onset of a cold can be prevented or the symptoms and duration of the cold can be reduced.
The cold is a mild viral illness that affects the upper airways of the respiratory system. The illness is contagious and the main symptoms are sneezing, a runny nose, headache, nasal congestion, phlegm in the throat, and a feeling of sickness and tiredness. The cold lasts between 3 and 10 days.
It is important to distinguish between colds and flu. Influenza is a viral infection of the respiratory tract but more serious than a cold.
The symptoms of influenza are sudden, while in a cold there is a phase of incubation. Symptoms of flu include a rising fever, tremors and muscle pain.
At the first symptoms take Oscillococcinum, one dose three times a day for two days. And complete with the trace element copper in ampoules (3 ampoules per day for adults) or in granules for children (5 granules, 3 times a day for two days).
When the cold is already established
Allium cepa is prescribed when the patient has a profuse watery nasal discharge, which falls drop by drop and is irritating; it aggravates the nostrils and upper lip. It is also linked with non-irritating tearing and itchy eyes.
Hydrastis canadensis is used if the patient emits large plugs of yellow, thick, sticky and very viscous mucus that solidifies in the nostrils and drains the nasal cavity. There is a slight cough with greenish-yellow phlegm.
The secretions of the medication Kalium bichromicum are yellow-green, stringy, slimy, sticky and sometimes bloody. There is a hard crusting inside the nose.
When the patient blows their nose, they eject elastic, hard and adherent mucus plugs. Another symptom is a violent cough that worsens at night when undressing or between two and three o’clock in the morning.
Mercurius solubilis is prescribed in rhinitis and acute or recurring rhinopharyngitis. Yellow and irritating secretions that aggravate the nostrils. There is pain in the pharyngeal mucosa and a metallic taste in the mouth. There is also fetid breath and a burning tearing.
Nux vomica is used when symptoms appear after being exposed to cold. The nose is blocked overnight with sneezing upon waking and during the day there is rhinitis with clear mucus.
Sambucus nigra is recommended if the nose is blocked and dry, forcing the patient to breathe with the mouth open. Babies cannot breastfeed. In the larynx there is redness and thick sticky mucus.
