Acute diarrhoea or gastro-enteritis and homeopathy

Homeopathy has several homeopathic remedies for the treatment of acute diarrhoea or gastro-enteritis.

The homeopathic remedy that is used will vary depending on the symptoms that are exhibited: whether diarrhoea is the dominant symptom, whether it is combined with vomiting or abdominal pain or caused by nerves, whether the patient is an infant and whether the patient has a temperature, is dehydrated or fatigued.

The main thing that we want to avoid when profuse diarrhoea occurs is dehydration. It is crucial that we re-hydrate to replace lost fluids, electrolytes, prebiotics and probiotics.

Homeopathic remedies for diarrhoea

The recommended dosage is of 5 granules to be taken every hour or after each bowel movement.

Podophyllum peltatum 9C

Podophyllum peltatum is prescribed for profuse, watery or mucous diarrhoea. The diarrhoea usually happens first thing in the morning or before midday. It is normally preceded by pain and gurgling. The faeces are yellow and foul smelling.

Aloe socotrina 9C

Aloe is prescribed for diarrhoea that produces flatulence. The patient is afraid of passing wind due to sphincter weakness. The diarrhoea is urgent and burning, and the patient has reduced sphincter control.

Veratrum album 9C

Veratrum album is prescribed for diarrhoea that causes a severe loss fluid and electrolytes. Fever, cramps, cold sweats and abundant vomiting are all common.

Cuprum metallicum 9C

Cuprum metallicum is prescribed for diarrhoea that comes along with colic pains in the abdomen and localised pain in the calves. The diarrhoea starts and ends abruptly. The patient feels better after drinking cold water.

Argentum nitricum 9C

Argentum nitricum is prescribed for diarrhoea that is brought about by feeling nervous, for example before an exam or before travelling. Argentum nitricum people are impulsive, nervous and irrationally fearful. They enjoy eating sweets and have a tendency to emit thunderous burps.

They suffer from stomach pain and their diarrhoeal stools are green, have the appearance of mashed spinach and smell very unpleasant.

Arsenicum album 9C

Arsenicum album is the homeopathic remedy that is used for traveller’s diarrhoea, a type of diarrhoea that is caused by mild food poisoning. The patient feels a burning pain in his stomach and is very pale and feverish. He fluctuates between anxious restlessness and despondency.

His stools are black, liquid and burning hot “like fire”. Vomiting that causes a burning sensation can also occur.

Bryonia Alba 9C

Bryonia Alba is used when diarrhoea happens after ingesting too many cold drinks, after an annoyance or after suffering from intense pain. The patient feels worse after eating acidic or bitter foods.

Colocynthis 9C or Magnesia phosphorica 9C

These medications are interchangeable. They are used for painful diarrhoea that starts and ends suddenly. The patient feels better when he is doubled-up.

Chamomilla vulgaris 9 or 15C

Chamomila vulgaris is prescribed for babies, when the diarrhoea is triggered by teething.

The diarrhoea is green and has the appearance of spinach and scrambled eggs. The infant feels relieved when he is rocked or driven in a car and with passive movement.

Additional information regarding diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is an emergency situation, in which the intestine attempts to purge itself from harmful or indigestible substances by carrying out frequent bowel movements. Acute diarrhoea is also known as gastro-enteritis.

Diarrhoea can be caused by food intolerance (i.e. milk, fruit…), by food poisoning or when the patient has consumed food or drink that is contaminated with certain types of bacteria or parasites. It can also occur as a result of viral infections, anti-biotic or laxative medication and as a result of certain diseases or syndromes affecting the gastro-intestinal tract.

Babies usually have diarrhoea during teething, when they have a cold and when they have worms. Soft, pasty stools are also common in breastfeeding infants.

When should you call the doctor?

  • When acute diarrhoea does not cease after 2 days in babies and infants or after 5 days in adults.
  • When the diarrhoea is severe and is accompanied by vomiting, pain, fever and general malaise. This could be caused by a Salmonella infection.
  • When you suffer from chronic diarrhoea.
